The things people say !

We were having a discussion on whether the devil has influence in this world and and i suppose (as a side effect) on christians.
My position is that he is totally defeated to those that are resting in Jesus and Jesus Word.
Now tragedies still happen in this world (yes?).
I have heard these responses from independent people since the Queensland flood :
"oh well that's life".
"you can be unlucky eh".
"that was such an unusual weather pattern, makes you realise how puny man is compared to the weather, doesn't it?"
"mother nature you are full now please stop raining".
"mother nature has not been kind to us".
"mother nature is really pissed off !"
"if we had done right engineering of new development this would not have happened".
'if we had better warning systems this would not have happened".
"this is a wake up call for those that have left (specific religious organisation)".
"this is the bible belt of australia, god is telling them something".
"of course this is from god; he controls everything doesn't he".
" the people who prayed for rain better pray for it to stop".
me (when i can) : "it might not be god but fallen creation waiting for the sons of God to enforce the victory while the devil is trying to deliver more confusion to believers and unbelievers alike".

So, is it : just the way things are, mother nature being thirsty, bad luck, wild evolving Earth, bad planning, god's judgement, evil angels or fallen creation?
