Every day people are divesting themselves from organized religion and institutional church.
It goes deeper than that.
They are shedding many of the ideas, beliefs, doctrines and mindsets that they have been carrying inside themselves, which they picked up from their involvement in religion.
I was once a religious leader myself and led a church. I had those ideas, beliefs, doctrines and mindsets inside myself,
and I taught them to others.
I was sincere but I was sincerely wrong.
Religion is often what is holding things back,
and blocking the way for others to experience life and freedom.

What if all us religious leader types also divested ourselves

There are a lot of passages about endurance. At first glance they seem to indicate that if you don't endure to the end you will not be saved.

That is true.

If you are...

A. A Jew and,
B. You lived from the time Jesus came to the time the Roman soldiers destroyed Jerusalem under Titus.

The issue here is this. At the time Paul or the writer of Hebrew wrote these verses, the nation of Israel was going through a transition from the Law to Grace, from the Old Covenant to the New.

As such there were Jews who has just been converted that were suffering from the persecution from their fellow Jews. Very much like someone who left the Islamic faith in Arabic countries.

Hence many for the fear of persecutions turn back to the Law and went back to the temple sacrifices. The problem is this the temple was in Jerusalem and was the embodiment to Mount Sinai.

When they decided to do so, they were fearful of leaving Jerusalem a city dear to them. They had feared that if they leave Jerusalem they would lose their salvation and their God.

The writer of Hebrews hence challenge the Hebrew believers to as such not to "shrink back" or be like Esau who only look for temporal blessings.

Peter tells the Jews not to turn to vomit. In other words "don't go back to the Law". If they had they would have remained in Jerusalem.

In Hebrews the writer tells that Jerusalem is not an enduring city and that they would to go outside in chapters 12-13. He also assures them that God will "never leave them not forsake them" despite them leaving Jerusalem.

Jerusalem was invaded via a siege by Titus. Many who did not listened to Jesus, Paul, Peter and also the writer of Hebrews remained in Jerusalem and were trapped when Titus build a wall to keep the Jews from leaving Jerusalem.

Like the 5 unwise Virgins they were caught when the access to leave Jerusalem was closed. Without food coming in or out, the Jews could not trade without the permission of the Romans.

The emperor who ordered the massacre of Jerusalem was Nero. His name in Hebrew carries the number 666 and was known to his friends as the "beast".

Hence they could not buy or sell without the authority of Nero whose Hebrew initials are 666.

So the Jews "who did not endure till the end" and turned back to the Law were locked in Jerusalem and were either starved to death or perished under fire in AD70.

Brothers and sisters. Those passages do not apply to you. There are for a generation which Jesus wept for when he entered Jerusalem in AD33.

When we tell others that the book of Revelation deals with events which had happened in AD70, we are usually met with opposition by people who insist they are of the future.

Here's a helpful way of studying the relevant passages of scripture to get a sense of the timeline.

First understand when John the Baptist came, he already announced it was the last days when he said "the axe is already at the root of the tree".

Secondly when you read the warnings of Jesus and the comparisons to his previous "generations" like Sodom and Nineveh, you would note that the warnings had referred to his generation.

Also note that Jesus gave multiple warnings to flee Jerusalem. Such warnings can be seen when he entered Jerusalem.

The main passage of such prediction of events is found in Matthew 24, Jesus giving his prediction of events that will happen. This is tied to Revelation. You will see the Angels gathering the elect. That happened in Revelations 7. You see Jerusalem being set on fire. That is the mountain in Revelation 8.

The refrain of fleeing a fleeting city, which does not last forever, is also found in Hebrews 12-13.

The destruction of the temple and the burning of Jerusalem were also spoken in Hebrew 10:26 as "the judgment and fiery indignation".

These events were also mentioned in Joel 2 in the passages quoted by Peter in Acts 2 when he said the Spirit will be poured out on all flesh in the "last days".

The events mentioned in Joel 2 spoke of the events which Paul described as the "coming wrath" which were directed to the Jews who opposed the Gospel being preached to the Gentiles. Paul said it was already reaching its limit then.

Hence these are the passages to read.

Many people forget that the parable of the 10 Virgins is part of the Olivet discourse. It flows from Jesus's warning to flee Jerusalem.

Many people are not aware that Titus, who invaded Jerusalem for 42 months, realized he could not storm Jerusalem, as it had 3 layer of walls, deployed a different tactic to invade Jerusalem.

He build another around wall around Jerusalem. He did this so that no one can leave or enter Jerusalem.

As a result of this Titus used to wall to starve the Jews to hunger and disease and caused many to betray their fellow Jews. That was how brothers became to be against one another.

Matthew 25:10-13
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

"Modern Christianity mostly revolves around the teachings of Saint Paul, and not Jesus. The central creeds of Institutional Christianity contain little or no teachings of Jesus.

Jesus had very little to do with religion. He had no home in any particular religious sect. He did not identify himself with the Essenes, Pharisees, Zealots, Priests or Rabbis. He did not subscribe to any school of thought, whether it was the school of the great Rabbi Hillel, Philo the philosopher, or the school of the Cynics, all of which had a strong following in his day.

Jesus identified with the whole of humankind irrespective of race, religion, or gender. His vision transcended any sect. He was not a member of any exclusive group. Jesus recognized that no group had a monopoly on the Truth or God. Some of Jesus’s earliest followers wrongly assumed that only their small group could claim to be his true disciples. But Jesus taught that any person who listened to the Spirit of God inside them and loved their neighbor were themselves a Jesus in their own right.

Jesus was not part of any kind of Establishment. Not an old one or a new one. Contrary to popular belief, Jesus did not replace Judaism with Christianity. At a later point, others organized an establishment called Christianity, but the itinerant Jesus had nothing to do with that. The very nature of an establishment was contrary to his free spirit.

Jesus was always picking a fight with religion. Religion was supposed to help people know God, but Jesus exposed the ways it was the obstacle hindering it. Jesus spoke of being divine AND human. He wanted humankind to know that, contrary to the view of religion, the two were not in opposition to each other. Jesus chose some of the most notorious “sinners” of his day as his close friends, and in so doing, confronted the false notion that some people did not qualify for God’s love and acceptance. Jesus didn’t allow the adulterous woman to be stoned to death as the religious law required. He stood in opposition to the performance-based mentality of relating to God."

We create external authorities that rule us through our imaginations. It is the way our mind is taught to reason (religion, politics, commerce, etc). It sets up a code of practice, , elects committees, and appoints human leaders or gurus. We create make believe powers who rule us through belief systems. They often publish their code of practices, their constitutions, and these rules and regulations, and create authorities in our imaginations. They can give us a hard time and will continually judge and condemn us. They war against each other and the reason for this is simple. As soon as we designate a value as being good we immediately create the opposite view or principle as being evil. We are continuously creating these powers - one is just as corrupt as the other. No wonder our world is a mess and no one can win. This is the only way the false "God" of religion can rule over us. He has to use man made rules and regulations. He is not omnipotent or omnipresent. How could he be? He doesn't even exist!

But not so with that universal Jesus Spirit that runs through us all. He doesn't need any rule books or man centered organizations. That Spirit within us can communicate with us anytime and anywhere and show us all things! A whole new eternal life giving multidimensional world. That's once we turn there!

Gnosticism has historically always been treated by the church as a heresy. Universalism however has always been treated as an extreme belief, though not heretical.

Gnosticism is what john is dealing with in his epistles, specifically in 1 john. The belief is summarized by saying that all created matter is made imperfect and can only be perfected through gnosis or knowledge. The idea of western evangelicalism is similar - all is inherently evil or sinful and only redeemable through confession of a religious incantation which then allows for knowledge thus redeeming the person.

Universalism is an eschatological hypothesis based on speculation and scripture. It says that all will eventually be right with the created ones, whether that be immediately or after a time of being salted with fire.

Problem is - at least universalism is biblical. Our modern evangelicalism is nothing but pure historical Gnosticism dressed up with magical incantations of "sinners prayers" by which the result will be redemption.

Jesus has redeemed all people. past tense rather than future tense, and by his working not our knowledge. Let's not fall into the trap of not understanding what we are teaching!
